Google Voice is a great service. It allows users to give out a phone number that, depending on the user’s settings, can ring one phone, several phones, or go straight to voicemail. It will also send you an email or SMS you when you have a voicemail. You can even see SMS messages, for free. The catch is, it’s still invite-only.
