Hi Tech Ice Blasting

Posted on December 21, 2012December 21, 2012 by npman4k

In the past I’ve had parts of my car sand blasted when the bottoms of the doors needed touching up over large areas and when the roof had some bad rust spots, particularly where the windshield met the roof. Our winters are cold and snowy, with lots of sand, gravel, and salt on the roads. We use oil sprays to protect the undersides of our vehicles, and we put oil in our car doors, too. But once the paint peels and chips from contact with the gravel and sand spray from the winter roads, the salt starts corroding the underlying metal.

I guess I had the doors repainted twice on my previous car. The experts said that it was important to sand blast the rust spots before applying the new undercoat and paint, since residual rust would spread and catalyze the corrosive process. But I’d find left over sand in the car and I imagine dry ice blasting would have been a better solution.

Dry Ice Blasting accelerates tiny dry ice pellets in a jet of compressed air and is ideal for removing coatings such as oil, grease, coal dust, soot, adhesives, varnish, mold and bitumen. The ice pellets are superior over other blasting materials, such as sand, glass and plastic, and the dry ice process does not utilize toxic chemicals and solvents. The Dry Ice vaporizes on contact, leaving the target surfaces dry, clean, and residue free, with no waste products. Dry Ice Blasting is non-conductive and is often used while industrial equipment is in operation, saving the cost of downtime.
